Solutions for Analyzing Volatiles in Solids, Liquid and Gases
Volatile chemicals can be analyzed using a variety of techniques from qualitative, non-specific detectors to very reliable and quantitative GC and GCMS methods. In many cases, remote sample collection and laboratory analysis have several advantages over on-site analysis. Simple, rugged samplers allow the collection of gas, liquid or solid samples without the need for power, field calibration or highly experienced technicians. Collecting the sample without modification in the field eliminates the chance of losing important analytes, as can occur with adsorption tubes. Samples can be collected from several locations and then analyzed on the same laboratory instrument. The result is lower overall costs and elimination of inter-instrument bias.
Entech has been perfecting the art and science of quantifying levels of volatile chemicals in gas phase matrices from % levels to well below 1 PPB. A new surface coating called SiloniteTM allows stainless steel sampling containers, transfer lines and connective fittings and valves to be rendered as inert as fused silica, greatly extending the range of compounds that can be collected in the field. With Silonite coated canisters, compounds can be analyzed up to several weeks later with very little change in gas phase concentrations. Turn key solutions are available for field sampling into vacuum tight Silonite coated canisters, laboratory analysis using multi-position autosamplers and cleanup systems that allow the coated canisters to be re-used hundreds of times.
The introduction of Large Volume Static Headspace (LVSH) in 1999 has created a powerful new tool for analyzing volatiles in the headspace above solid and liquid samples. The static nature of the analysis eliminates the aerosols and foaming associated with dynamic headspace analysis, while lowering detection limits 100-500 times below conventional loop-injection headspace inlets. Combined with the inertness of Silonite coating and Entech's 14 years of experience in preconcen-tration technology, LVSH is allowing a more complete analysis of foods, flavors, odors and out-gassing contaminants than ever before.
