L-3 ELAC Nautik is a company at Kiel, Germany, with more than 80 years of experience in development and production of hydroacoustic systems. The product folio includes sonar systems, echo sounders as well as systems for underwater communication and data link units for military and civil application. All products are manufactured and sold at the Kiel facility.
Besides furnishing of new built vessels and submarines, L-3 ELAC Nautik specializes in sonar modernization by customer-specific modification development.
L-3 ELAC Nautik further offers installation and service of the products and customer support by training and logistic. Our products and systems are known for their reliability and advanced technique. The company is certified according to DIN EN ISO 9001.
In 1908 a group of scientists at Kiel started research about the sound propagation in water. The company ELECTROACUSTIK (ELAC) founded in 1926 used the research results for the development of first units ready for serial production, as for instance echo sounders.
After the war ELAC used its know-how in underwater sounding for re-entry into commercial markets. In 1951, the first fishing sounder called “Fischlupe” succeeded in world-wide distribution of the Kiel technology.
When the German Armed Forces were founded in 1956, a demand for special products and systems for underwater communication arose. Only ELAC was able to develop and produce these systems, leading to a constant extension of the product range.
Today L-3 ELAC Nautik's systems and products are installed on all NATO vessels as well as on navy vessels of befriended nations. Apart from the expansion in the naval market, L-3 ELAC Nautik could achieve a world-wide reputation as manufacturer of hydro-acoustic systems for research vessels and became a reliable partner in systems for merchant shipping.
Global markets require global structures. Since 1998 L-3 ELAC Nautik GmbH is a subsidiary of L-3 Communications with headquarters in New York. In addition to the advantages of a strong mother company, customers benefit from the wide product range resulting from the cooperation of all L-3 companies.
