DxO Labs was created in 2002 as a spin-off of Vision IQ, a world-leader in the field of computer vision, thereby benefiting from the latter’s 10 years’ experience in the field of image processing. The ever increasing resolution of cameras and the corresponding ever shrinking size of pixels put immense pressure on imaging performance and component size. With pixel sizes now reaching below 2µm, the challenge can no longer be addressed purely with traditional optics and electronics. DxO Labs propose a new approach where digital processing can relieve some of the optical and electronic constrains.
In order to face these challenges, DxO Labs has built a strong R&D multi-disciplinary team worldwide. With an optimized knowledge base of all aspects of camera system performance and design, this team is then able to craft solutions which uniquely adapt to the particular constraints or requirements of a given application.
For example, in order to reduce the optical system cost, DxO Labs developed an innovative extended depth of field (EDoF) technology. Based on using the principles of longitudinal chromatic aberration, the solution allows a fixed focus lens paired with DxO Digital Optics technology to achieve performance normally only available in a lens system with an actuator. The elimination of the actuator results in dramatic cost savings, both in terms of materials and improved yields for the simpler fixed focus camera design.
